Gorgeous in coral, in a tone-on-tone look, was the redheaded Marcia Cross (Desperate Housewives), who accessorized her Marc Bouwer jersey gown at the shoulders with Art Deco-style carved coral and black and white diamond platinum clips by Lorraine Schwartz. She also sported a custom ring of carved coral, black enamel and diamonds. Clips and brooches remain a significant accessory for those who adorn outside the box. Another notable example was seen in looks created by actress Natalie Portman in her use of a gem and diamond brooch on a waist sash of a vintage Chanel cocktail dress.

Those wearing necklaces opted for super long ones, often layered. Film and TV star Mandy Moore wore a stunning example in a long pearl and onyx bead necklace against a black lace strapless Ralph Lauren. While Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds) sported onyx, colored stone, and diamond platinum chains by Neil Lane. In Fred Leighton, film and TV star Mira Sorvino adorned in an Edwardian moonstone, natural pearl and diamond swag necklace.

Fred Leighton darlings included pink spinel pendant earrings and rubellite ring with sapphires and diamonds on Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City fame, and carved lava rock cameo ring on Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer). But it wasnt just the ladies sporting unique gem-set jewelry on the red carpet. More male celebrities are selecting jewelry accessories. Men are becoming more polished by complementing their suits and tuxes with watches, bracelets, dog tags, lapel pins and tie tacks, says New York City jewelry fashion expert Michael OConnor. He notes greater interest among men in platinum, diamonds, and a broader range of gemstones.

Undoubtedly, color was the order of the day, adding a note of individuality to red carpet dressing. The most memorable frocks were in glam red, mesmerizing green (both kelly and lime), regal purple, sumptuous burgundy, midnight blue, yummy chocolate, and dreamy pale pink. In jewelry, bold splashes of ruby, sapphire, onyx, and pearls adorned pop stars of television and cinema.

Necks were naked, mostly, in favor of huge gem drop earrings befitting a queen at her coronation; colorful cocktail rings with extremely large center stones; and gem-encrusted stackable cuff, line and/or bangle bracelets. Color was used either monochromatically or to add excitement to white, nude, pale pink, and silver shaded gowns. |
