Then there were cinema sirens like Best Actress Marion Cotillard (“La Vie En Rose”) who added a tinge of color to her formal whites with diamonds in darker shades. Dressed in a glistening silver-scaled mermaid gown, Cotillard layered long necklaces of champagne diamond briolette and light and dark brown diamond beads by Chopard, and flashed some right handed bling in 15-carat square brilliant cut yellow diamond ring. In a pale pink bustier Dior by John Galliano, Cameron Diaz, Oscar presenter, also accessorized in colored diamonds, including pink and white diamond platinum earrings, and 18k yellow gold smoky diamond ring, which she perched on her pink, all from Bvlgari.

Among the few who pushed the glam envelope, “Juno” writer-director Diablo Cody chose a flowing leopard-print Dior caftan. But instead of accessorizing in $1 million Stuart Weitzman diamond-encrusted heels, as she was offered to wear for the occasion, she opted to adorn in a bold turquoise bracelet and ring that popped against the earthy, savannah colors of her gossamer floor-length dress. Her choice best expressed her style mantra of casual, free-spirited elegance.

So, what lessons can the rest of us glean from this year’s Oscar red carpet?
While many claim that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, when you wear colored stones you know you won’t look like your best friend. Gems in shades of red are among celebrity favorites, including ruby, spinel and garnet. Blues, because they go so well with most skin types, will always be classic in gems like sapphire, topaz, and turquoise. And, the green movement continues with emerald, green tourmaline and jade strong. Although bold, dangling earrings remain a popular choice to bring color to the face with open necklines, the statement necklace is back. And, platinum is no longer dominating the red carpet, as we find more yellow and rose gold jewelry designs upping the ante in colorful choices.
Overall, this style critic gives two thumbs up to those who look to be unique by wearing color, while keeping it tastefully simple.

Hollywood Hotties in Bright Jeweled Color Got Noticed on Oscar’s Red Carpet
80th Annual Academy Awards 2008

Some of Oscar’s favorite leading ladies wore the color of the carpet itself in gowns of varying shades of red. Although the trend at the 80th annual Academy Awards was for classic looks in dark or light neutrals, those who sizzled on the red carpet made a statement in color, whether in dress, jewelry or both.
Many style critics of the event that aired Feb. 24th from the Kodak Theatre described this year’s red carpet fashion parade as lackluster, wondering if the last minute settlement of the Hollywood writers’ strike (a three-month long walkout that caused the cancellation of the Golden Globes in January) left celebrity stylists little time to prepare. But among a sea of black gowns, those in vivid jewel tones added just the right dash of excitement to get fashionholics revved up.

Those drawing the most limelight dressed in iconic ruby red like Heidi Klum, Katherine Heigl, Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren, and Miley Cyrus; or emerald green as seen on Amy Adams and Saoirse Ronan; or tanzanite in purplish shades such as Cate Blanchett. Some opted to accessorize their rich colored gowns with gem-set jewels in a tonal fashion, while others contrasted the color of their jewelry with that of their dress.

Opting for tone-on-tone, model Heidi Klum topped off her scarlet John Galliano gown in jewels from her own collection with Mouawadearrings, ring and cuff set with rubies, kunzites and pink diamonds in 18k rose gold. Also choosing a monochromatic look was tween TV icon Miley Cyrus, in chandelier-like earrings of red garnet and a garnet ring in 18k gold by Neil Lane. To set off her ruched burgundy dress, Julie Christie, best actress nominee for “Away From Her”, wore an unusual iridescent “pink scarab” necklace and earrings in 18k gold by Neil Lane as well. ...

Rich in jewel tone, Cate Blanchett wore a tanzanite colored halter gown by Dries Van Noten, with a decorated silver beaded neckline encrusted in jade. Complementing the trim and contrasting the vivid purplish-blue of the dress, Blanchett wore dramatic earrings in blackened platinum and diamonds dangling emerald drops totaling 30-carats by Lorraine Schwartz. While in a creamy buttercup yellow gown, Rosamund Pike, actress and fiancé of director Joe Wright (nominated for “Atonement”), adorned in long, lean earrings set with 14 carats of green tourmalines and a bracelet with over 85 carats of honey golden citrines in fancy cutsall set in 18k yellow gold by H.Stern.

Although many Hollywood A-listers played it safe in classic black attire with white diamonds, there were those who made that look appear anything but basic with colorful jewels, as did Penelope Cruz with stunning drop earrings encrusted in diamonds and 25-carats of rubies by Chopard. ...
