By Robert Weldon, G.G.
The issue concerning blue topaz and other irradiated gems today isn't so much the radiation used to turn colorless topaz blue. Rather, it's about Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing requirements. However, the University of Missouri does not have the required separate license to import or distribute irradiated topaz in the U.S. Most irradiated blue topaz sold in the United States in recent years has been imported from overseas, and most of it was irradiated at overseas facilities. ...[more]
