All ICA members should take immense pride in knowing that our association is not just discussing the importance of fostering an ethical and responsible supply chain—we are actively making a tangible difference and transforming lives.

It is estimated that over 10 million people are involved in artisanal mining and gem cutting, contributing around 80% of the world’s colored gemstones. Many of these individuals live in developing countries, often under very challenging conditions. As an industry, we have the power to improve their living standards by providing access to clean water and electricity, health and sanitation services, education for children, medical care, safety training and equipment, empowerment for women, gemmological knowledge, agricultural development and protection of their land.

Our charity, Gems Keep Giving, was established by the ICA to partner with artisanal colored gemstone mining and gem-cutting communities across the globe. We fund projects that address local needs, protect resources, and enhance lives. The impact of Gems Keep Giving projects will be long-lasting, benefiting both the people and the environment in colored gem-producing communities.

What began as a simple idea in 2019 became a reality and one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life when the Gems Keep Giving project in Kamtonga, Kenya, tapped into a fresh, clean water supply 200 meters below the surface. This sustainable and life-changing resource now serves a gem-mining community of 3,000 people.

I was moved to tears when I watched a live video feed of the first precious stream of clear water emerging. The local community erupted in joyous celebration, singing, dancing, and expressing their overwhelming disbelief and happiness at the arrival of this vital resource. Gems Keep Giving had made this incredible moment in their lives and their future had changed forever.

This achievement would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors and, most importantly, the dedication and tireless efforts of ICA Board members Miriam and Evan Caplan, who managed the project and ensured its successful completion.

Gems Keep Giving has now reached a new milestone with its attainment of 501(c)(3) non-profit status in the USA, allowing for tax-deductible donations from supporters worldwide. In the coming weeks, we will share exciting news about the appointment of a new independent Board of Directors, which will help elevate the charity, continue the fundraising efforts, and carry out these remarkable projects.

We need the support of the entire industry, and I encourage you all to visit www.gemskeepgiving.org to learn how you can contribute.

Take a bow, Gems Keep Giving!
